Light from the laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle, thereby disabling the follicle and its ability to grow hair without damaging the surrounding skin. An ideal candidate for laser hair removal has dark coarse hair with fair skin. Blonde, gray and light red hair will not respond to the laser and optimal results will not be achieved.
Hair grows in three cycles. The most effective time for hair removal is during the growth phase. At any time about 10-30% of your hair is actively growing. Since there’s no way to know which hair is growing, treatments need to be repeated approximately every 4-6 weeks. Typically, six treatments will be necessary for full results. Depending on a person’s hormonal drive for new hair growth, results may vary. Some hair may grow in the weeks between treatments. This hair is usually finer, lighter and thinner after each treatment.
Laser Hair Removal is FDA approved and is both safe and effective.
The skin may become slightly red and puffy around the hair follicles. This usually dissipates within an hour and most people return to normal activity immediately.
You may feel a tingling or snapping sensation like a rubber band. Cold air may be directed toward the treated area to help make the treatment sufficiently comfortable.
Laser hair removal is FDA approved to be up to 80% permanent hair reduction. Once a satisfactory level of hair removal has been achieved, the results can persist for years. Very often genetic and ethnic hormonal drive for new hair growth can cause the need for maintenance treatments.
For best results you should avoid tanning and all sunless tanning products for four to six weeks prior to treatment. Use SPF 30 or more sunblock when outdoors. Cold sores should be treated and healed before treatment. People with darker skin types may need to use a lightening cream for one month prior to treatment.
People who have had problems with scarring or keloids in the past, or problems with skin darkening from inflammation, may not be good candidates for laser hair removal. Those who have taken Accutane® for acne should discontinue it for six months before laser treatments.
