What is Laser Mole Removal?
Moles are clusters of pigmented cells that form dark spots on the skin. While they are generally harmless, some can become cancerous and, thus, need to be removed. People will also have harmless moles removed for cosmetic reasons.
Dermatologists may use any of four ways to remove a mole: excisional surgery, punch biopsy, shave excision, and laser removal. The last method is the least likely to cause scarring. Laser mole removal is also non-surgical. As such, there is minimal risk of infection.
In laser mole removal, a laser that harmlessly bypasses the skin is used to reach the pigment within the mole. The laser causes the cells in the mole to heat up and eventually rupture, and the body gradually absorbs them.
Depending on the size and depth of the mole, the client may need more than one treatment. However, it all depends on the unique situation. During your initial consultation, we can give you more details about what kind of results you can expect.
Who is a Good Candidate for Laser Mole Removal?
The ideal candidate for laser mole removal is a healthy adult with realistic expectations. Since laser mole removal typically completely removes the mole, a client who is concerned about it being cancerous should have the mole examined before getting it removed.
A Note About Moles and Cancer
Dermatologists use the ABCDE rule to determine if a mole should be checked for cancer. The rule goes as follows:
• Asymmetry—One half of the mole looks different from the other half
• Border—The mole has irregular, jagged or blurred edges
• Color—The mole is not all one color
• Diameter – The mole is over ¼ inch in diameter
• Evolving – The mole’s size, shape or color has been changing
